Business Poultry and Pork Processing
Operation This large poultry and pork processor operates 16 hours per day, six days per week, and processes approximately 80,000 chickens and 1,000 pigs per day. The plant includes four lagoons (approximately 15 million gallons total), has an average daily water flow of approximately 370,000 gallons. Prior to microbial treatment, the plant used an elaborate aerator system to treat the wastewater.
Problem Prior to treatment, the plant had serious grease accumulation problems in lagoon #1; strong foul odors; BOD and COD readings above legal standards; and high operational maintenance costs for the wastewater system.
Treatment After an initial shock dosage of Mega-Bac® products, an automatic dispensing pump was installed and a daily microbial maintenance program was established in the plant.
Results After 90 days, the accumulated grease in lagoon #1 was virtually eliminated. Within weeks, the foul odors were reduced significantly and have not returned. BOD levels were reduced by 97% within 90 days of treatment. The average BOD and COD input levels from the plant to the lagoons, were reduced and stabilized by 98% and 96%, respectively. Average levels over the treatment period were:
| Input Effluent | Effluent with Mega-Bac | |
|---|---|---|
| BOD | 2560 mg/L | 40 mg/L |
| COD | 5320 mg/L | 195 mg/L |
Conclusion Mega-Bac has proven to be an effective treatment of poultry and pork-processing plant wastewater effluent for the reduction of grease, odors and contaminant levels. Mega-Bac treatment eliminated the plant’s need to use its aerator systems, which substantially lowered its operating costs. The plant also no longer pays environmental fines.
