Employment History:

8/88 to Present.  Director of Research and Development and Corporate Vice-President, Micro-Bac International  Responsible for development of new products.  Also responsible for supervision of international laboratory testing services and production area as well as general corporate management.  Since September, 1986, also Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, University of Texas at Austin, Courses taught include graduate seminar in biotechnology, elementary microbiology, general microbiology, biochemistry and physiology of microorganisms, microbial ecology. Also Medical Microbiology taught through Division of Extension.

12/82-8/88.  Director for Research and Development, and Assistant General Manager Austin Biological Laboratories, Responsible for development of all clinical microbiology test kits including FDA submissions. Participated in reclassification petition for changing microdilution devices for susceptibility testing from Class III to Class II.  Approximately 40 new products were brought to market during this time period.  Also actively participated in initiating and carrying out international marketing plan in Europe.  Sales volume of products developed at time of departure equaled $1,000,000 per annum, approximately 40% of sales volume. Responsibilities also included technical service supervision to distributors and their sales forces.  As Assistant General Manager was responsible for company budgets, account authority and manager in absence of company head.

12/81-12/82.  Research Microbiologist in Clinical Diagnostics Division, New England Nuclear, DuPont Co. Billerica, MA. Responsible for research on ELISA system development for direct specimen diagnosis of viral and bacterial pathogens.

1/80-12/81.  Postdoctoral Research Associate with Dr. Charlotte Parker.  Dept. of Microbiology-University of Missouri Medical School and University of Texas at Austin.  Research was concerned with outer membrane structure of Bordetella pertussis using biochemical and immunochemical (including monoclonal antibody) techniques.

9/78-12/79.  Behringwerke AG Postdoctoral Fellow with Dr. Friedrich Seiler.  Organized research program on sialyl and galactosyltransferase.  Studied presence of sialyltransferase activity in Vibrio cholerae neuraminidase (company product) preparations.  Galactosyltransferase assay system was developed that gave significantly higher enzyme levels (greater sensitivity) than published methods and was 4X faster.  Found that galactosyltransferase activity was significantly elevated in cancer patient serum as compared with normal serum.  This system was under consideration as a diagnostic reagent at time of departure.  Was member of research team involved in purification of Bordetella pertussis adjuvant factor.  Was responsible for biochemical characterization of substance.  Factor was characterized as a heat-stable substance of lipid nature associated with, but not identical with lipopolysaccharide of organism.
