Remediation of BTEX and TPH

Project During construction at a service station it was discovered that gasoline and diesel fuel were present in the soil and groundwater. Later the underground storage tanks were removed, along with impacted soils. A temporary groundwater treatment system was installed to treat localized contaminated groundwater. Further assessment estimated that approximately 700 cubic yards of soil and associated groundwater were contaminated with BTEX and TPH concentrations, exceeding Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources (PADER) standards.

Treatment A groundwater monitoring program was implemented to monitor BTEX and TPH levels, and an on-site bioremediation program was initiated. An existing monitoring well in the contaminated area was inoculated with M-1000H® and OSNF nutrients.

Results Quarterly sampling showed a reduction in BTEX of over 85%. After the last sampling round, the owner petitioned PADER to close the site. Three years later, PADER determined that no further action on the site was required.
